Policy:

Teaching medical students and meeting the needs of the medical school are requirements of the SEAMO funding agreement and of the GFT agreement.

1. Calculation of undergraduate medical education requirements shall be completed by the UGE office and will include:
a. Realistic estimates of time required, based on half-days
b. Direct contact with learners
c. Indirect requirements (administration, preparation, follow-up)

2. Calculations prepared by UGE office will be reviewed by School of Medicine Executive.

3. UG Education assignments will be made by a committee to be established for this purpose.
a. Education assignments will be made to departments, not to individuals
b. Departments will assign responsibilities for education to individual faculty members based on the terms of the practice plans
c. The committee will comprise five members; one will be selected from each of four departments and the Associate Dean UGE will serve as a 5th member of the committee
d. All departments will serve on a rotational basis and for two year terms. On implementation, two of the first members shall be appointed for one year terms and two of the members appointed two year terms.

4. The Associate Dean will monitor the quality of teaching and, in conjunction with department heads, will take corrective action where required.

5. The Associate Dean will monitor compliance with assigned education responsibilities and report compliance by individuals to their departments and compliance by departments to SEAMO.

6. There will be financial implications regarding compliance:
a. Practice plans must contain provision for individual rewards and penalties related to compliance
b. Compliance with the department’s assigned responsibilities is a condition of full funding to the department.
